President Monson Shares a Short Halloween Story

How do prophets and apostles celebrate Halloween? While all of the brethren celebrate October 31st in their own unique way, this story, shared by President Thomas S. Monson in general conference in 2006, details President Monson's favorite Halloween memory. And, as is typical of our beloved prophet, the only spirits or ghosts that accompanied him on this holiday night were the spirit of service and the Holy Ghost.

Many years ago, on a Halloween night, it was my privilege to be of assistance to one who had temporarily lost his way and needed a helping hand to return. I was driving home from the office rather late. I had been stalling on Halloween, letting my wife handle the trick-or-treat visitors. As I passed St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, I remembered that a dear friend, Max, lay ill in that very hospital. As he and I had become acquainted years before, we discovered that we had grown up in the same ward, although at different times. By the time I was born, Max and his parents had moved from the ward.

That Halloween night, I drove into the parking lot and entered the hospital. As I stopped at the desk to inquire as to his room number, I was informed that when Max had registered at the hospital, he had listed as his religious preference not LDS but rather another church.

I entered Max’s room and greeted him. I told him how proud I was to be his friend and how much I cared about him. I talked about his career in banking and as an orchestra leader on the side. I discovered that he had been offended by a comment or two from others and so had decided to attend another church. I said to him, “Max, you hold the Melchizedek Priesthood. I would like to give you a blessing tonight.” He agreed, and the blessing was provided. He then informed me that his wife, Bernice, was also very ill and was, in fact, in an adjoining room. At my invitation, Max joined me in giving a blessing to her. He asked me to help him. I coached him. He anointed his wife. There were tears and embraces all around as I sealed the anointing with Max, his hands on his wife’s head with mine, making that Halloween evening one ever to be remembered.

As I left the hospital that night, I stopped at the desk and told the receptionist that with the permission of Max and his wife the record should be changed to reflect their membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I waited and I watched until it was changed.

My friends Max and Bernice are now both on the other side of the veil, but they spent the last period of their lives active and happy and receiving the blessings which come with testimonies of the gospel and attendance at church.

Boss's Day: 13 Spooky Video Game Bosses

Last year I shared My Top 10 Favorite Horrifying Video Game Bosses in honor of Boss's Day. This year I would like to continue the tradition and share with you 13 more spooky bosses.

Lavos - Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is one of the best video games ever created. The story is great, the battle system is fun, and there are loads of cool enemies to destroy. Lavos, the main antagonist, is no push over. I remember dying A LOT. I love the catchy battle theme and the psychedelic backgrounds. Obviously, the following videos contain SPOILERS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

The Emperor of Blobonia

This boss was really fun to fight! Not only are you fighting a big blob monster, but you also get to wear your blob as a mech suit and punch the crap out of the boss's face!

Majora's Mask

I know, I know, I'm being a little heavy on final bosses. But aren't final bosses usually the best? They are if the game is any good! You have to experience the Majora's Mask boss battle! If you have the Fierce Diety Mask though the battle is a total cake walk.

Pumpkin-Ghost/Planet of The Apes

I'm going to count this is two different bosses. In the original Japanese version of Monster Party for the NES the final boss of level 1 was a Planet of The Apes parody. In the American version we got Pumpkin-Ghost. "Please don't pick on me!" he says, ha!

William Birkin

The coolest thing about William Birkin is you witness his gruesome transformations throughout the entire game!

Eye of Cthulu

A giant floating eye of death to has a large gaping mouth. Sounds like a winner!

The Shadow Temple boss. It is invisible to the naked eye.

Deku Frog

She's gross, and another awesome Zelda mini-boss!

Dooplis

Dooplis is a mischivious Boo that resides in the Creepy Steeple. He's a total hoot!

Ghost Train (Cuphead 2016)

Cuphead is an indie game set to release in 2016. The game is stylized to look like a cartoon from the 1930's. Cuphead and his friend Mugman made a bet with the devil and lost, so now must do his bidding. Pretty much every level in this game is a boss fight, and they all look pretty fun. We only catch a small glimpse of the Ghost Train boss from the trailers, but it looks amazing!

Dr. Zomboss

If you haven't played Plants Vs Zombies then you are missing out! I downloaded the free version a few years ago and I still play a quick game every now and again. It's surprisingly addicting! Dr. Zomboss is the only and final boss of the game.

Giygas

Considered by most to be the most disturbing video game boss of all time. You cannot grasp the true form of Giygas' attack. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

Happy Trolloween

I recently acquired a complete set of Trash Can Trolls via trade from my friend @twan2330 on Instagram. He's all about them bootleg toys, check out his Instagram page, it's amazing!

Trash Can Trolls were produced by Topps, the same people that brought us Garbage Pail Kids. They were hoping to rival the success of GPK, but we all know that didn't quite work out and we were left with 43 TCT characters, each with one alternate name, much like GPK cards. It's a great series and I highly recommend it! I hope to one day soon snap pictures of every card, front and back, and post to my Flickr account. I will post a link once I get around to it. For now, here are some of the more Halloween themed TCT cards. Although, to be honest, just about all of them are Halloween worthy.
